Pushing Up The Daisies
When components of an interacting dynamical system (such as organs within an organism, or daisies within the Daisyworld model) have a limited range of viability to changes in some essential variable, intuition suggests that increasing any individual range of viability will also increase viability in the context of the whole system. We show circumstances in which the reverse is true.
متن کاملPushing up to a point: Assertiveness and effectiveness in leadership and interpersonal dynamics
Past work on interpersonal assertiveness and organizational effectiveness paints a mixed picture: some research suggests a positive link, other work highlights negative effects. This article reviews recent research and an account that stems from a different perspective, looking at assertiveness as a factor in leadership shortcomings and failure. This approach suggests that interpersonal asserti...
متن کاملPushing Up Hypotheses Using Context-Dependent Links
Perceptual understanding systems often involve building hierarchical groupings. The elements of such a hierarchy range from primitive elements at the lowest levels (such as pixels, in the case of image-understanding systems) to representations of complete real-world objects at higher levels. At each level, data are grouped together because they are identified as component parts of a single feat...
متن کاملBlow-up for the 1d Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with Point Nonlinearity Ii: Supercritical Blow-up Profiles
We consider the 1D nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with focusing point nonlinearity, (0.1) i∂tψ + ∂ 2 xψ + δ|ψ|p−1ψ = 0, where δ = δ(x) is the delta function supported at the origin. In the L supercritical setting p > 3, we construct self-similar blow-up solutions belonging to the energy space Lx ∩Ḣ x. This is reduced to finding outgoing solutions of a certain stationary profile equation. ...
متن کاملAre You "Pulling the Plug" or "Pushing Up the Daisies"?
We are becoming more and more dependent upon a broad range of more or less ubiquitous communication technologies, and these are increasingly integrated with our PCs. The more connected we become, the more important it is that we pro-actively manage our communication patterns. If not, we risk being forced to either temporarily disconnecting ourselves from communicating, or spend all our time try...
